Slight change of pace this week, with some Hasbro Star Wars Fighter Pods figures. Gaming purists beware, non serious material follows. You have been warned :-)
The first time I saw these figures was, I think, in Forbidden Planet. Since then they've turned up in such august locations as Poundstretchers and Poundland. Hasbro seems to have largely moved on to other stuff.
The figures are about 20mm tall, but don't have any sort of realistic human proportions - they're kids' toys, so that's pretty much to be expected. They're flexible vinyl, and come "pre-painted". I decided early on there was no point trying to repaint them...
They do base fairly easily, and I glued a number to washers, which I then covered with pva and sand. The only reason I haven't done them all is that they're much easier to store unbased.
There are a few vehicles available, although the scales are all over the place, both within each vehicle and across the range. The original purpose of the game was to place your hero inside a sphere and flick it at the enemy figures. The vehicles are just there to hold the spheres, to give some variety to the game.
The range covers both the Clone Wars (movies and cartoon) and New Hope eras, but only really provides one side of each conflict. The Clone Wars, for example, have Clone Wars Troopers, but no robots, and the New Hope figures have plenty of Stormtroopers, but no Rebels. There are evil and good characters for both periods, but infantry skirmish won't really be possible - unless there's a group of Clone Troopers who've been in hiding for a couple of decades...
For rules, the plan is to use Blasters and Bulkheads, which is pretty much made for this stuff. I believe they toned down the mystical "laser swords" for the second edition, but I have the first edition, and they're in there.
Anyway, that was way too serious for what's about to follow, so without further ado, the pictures.
Clone Wars heroes. For some reason I added the Han in carbonite figure to this picture, apologies for that. I also included Jar Jar Binks, so apologies for that as well :-)
Clone Wars villains
Clone Wars characters. This is mostly bad guys and bounty hunters, but there's a jedi in there as well
Republic DropShip
The Emperor, Darth Vader and pre-Vader Luke
Some of the New Era characters
Some Sandtroopers. They also do Snowtroopers
What would Star Wars be without droids?
Falcon, Snowspeeder and AT-AT.
In addition to the regular figures, there are "holographic" versions of each of the major characters. These may have a use for hidden movement, but other than that I'm not sure what game purpose they'd serve. I'm not sure how well these pictures will show up, but here goes
Finally, just to include a "regular" figure, here's a size comparison shot against a 28mm Hasslefree figure
I've just finished some zombie survivors, so hopefully more grown up toy figures will return in the next post.
